Travels in Thailand

Patpong

4/4/2010

I have been debating whether I should blog about Patpong. For those of you who do not know it is a famous red light district in the city. Sex tourism is very well known here, they have a word for foreigners who come here for the infamous night life - Sexpats.

I will admit that I recently went to Patpong with a Thai chaperone. I can assure you that nothing happened. We did not go see any "shows", but we did go into a bar where I was the recipent of a lot of attention from an attractive Thai woman.

I would like to think that the attention I received was due to my good looks and wit, but alas, we all know what was really going on. I thanked her, but told her that I was too old and also married. She persisted for a while before getting bored with me and moving on.

Like I said, nothing happened. But now I know what the price for a "happening" would be.

I do not lack for social outings here. I think my Thai friends have a master plan for keeping me busy during non working hours. I'll bet there is a spreadsheet on the network drive at work that details which person is responsible for Jim on any particular day.
I am grateful for their kindness and hospitality.

A friend from work took me to his apartment for dinner. His wife also works in the office so we all three drove to his home in his car.

Here is my advice for driving here - Do Not Do It!!!!

Not really sure how to describe it. It's not just that they drive on the left hand side of the road, but it's the free form nature of it. Even being a passenger is disorienting. All the vehicles drive very close to each other - it almost feels  like a bumper car ride. Driving in Italy would be much more relaxing.
